Frequently Asked Questions

What is Common Good Colorado?

We are a non-partisan coalition of doctors, lawyers, educators and civic leaders who share a common interest in how the legal system affects society and who are dedicated to improving it.

What are you working on?

Our objective is to identify those areas of everyday life where Colorado’s legal system isn’t serving the public well.  One area where we know this to be true is K-12 education. Our first project will be the development of the “Over-Ruled Schools Project” to restore the authority of parents, teachers and administrators to regain control of schools mired in bureaucracy and legal process. We also will be working to address deficiencies in the area of healthcare law.

What is your strategy to effect change?

We will identify problems in Colorado’s legal system and work with the public and state policymakers to identify solutions that will restore common sense to our legal system.

How does your mission differ from tort reform?

The objectives of the tort reform movement are to cap damages and to reduce liability for organizations and individuals that tend to be defendants in lawsuits. We have a different focus: restoring reliability and common sense to the system, focusing on how law supports the daily functions of a free society.  Tort reform starts with a point of view about what the limits of lawsuits.  We care more about restoring consistency in the law so that people feel confident in everyday choices.

Who is leading this effort?

Our Board of Directors includes lawyers, educators, doctors and civic leaders who share a common vision for improving Colorado’s legal system.  It is a decidedly non-partisan and independent group of state leaders.

Who supports Common Good Colorado?

Common Good Colorado is supported by a broad base of leaders in education, healthcare and civil justice, as well as foundations who all share our vision of restoring common sense to Colorado’s legal system.

What is your relationship with the national organization Common Good?

We are an independent non-profit organization operating as a state affiliate of the national organization Common Good. Our goal is to make the mission of the national organization meaningful at the state level.
